To make your own futon bunk bed that is safe for you and your family, you need to get two futon beds of the same size, prepare the lumber to be used for your bunk bed frame, make the bunk bed frame, attach the futon frame to the bunk bed frame, add a ladder to your bunk bed, apply a finish to your newly built futon bunk bed, and test your bunk bed before actual use.

Get two futon beds of the same size

To start off, you need to get two futon bed sets of similar size. Determine the dimensions of each part of the futon bed to make sure they are the same size and also to have the measurements you’ll need to build the frames for your futon bunk bed.

Prepare the lumber to be used for your bunk bed frame

In order to attach your futon beds and form them into a bunk bed, you need to prepare the lumber and cut it according to the measurements of the two futon beds to be used as the frame. The frame should consist of headboards, foot boards, and posts. Make sure you also have extra lumber for the ladder to be attached later on.

Make the bunk bed frame

After cutting your lumber, you can construct the bunk bed frame by drilling appropriate holes in your posts to attach your headboards, foot boards, and sideboards. Put together the parts of the bunk bed frame using bolts, nuts, and washers and make sure they are securely fastened.

Attach the futon frame to the bunk bed frame

Once your bunk bed frame is ready, you can attach your futons frames to it. Drill holes in the head and foot boards big enough to contain the bolts that come with the futon frames. You may also use a new set of bolts, washers, and nuts that fit in the holes of your bunk bed frame posts. After attaching both frames to each other, tighten the bolts to make sure your futon bunk bed is firmly attached.

Add a ladder to your bunk bed

Make a ladder that will allow you to reach the top bunk. Ideally, the ladder should be attached near the foot of the top bunk bed’s sideboard down to the sideboard of the bottom bunk. The ladder may also be placed at the foot board of your top bunk down to the foot board of your bottom futon bed if you prefer. The ladder should be attached using either metal brackets or simply by nailing each end of the ladder to the side or foot boards of the futon bunk bed.

Apply a finish to your newly built futon bunk bed

Once you have securely attached the ladder, as well as the futons to the frame, smooth the bunk bed boards using sand paper. Apply primer to the surface and let it dry. Finish your bunk bed frame with paint, varnish, stain, or sealer and allow it to dry.

Test your bunk bed before actual use

Make sure you test your new bunk bed first before actual use, especially when intended for use by kids. Watch out for wobbles that may require the tightening of bolts, as well as other possible defects that may cause your bunk bed to give at anytime.

After following these easy steps, you will be ready to enjoy a futon bunk bed that is safe, fun, and convenient for you and your family.
