If you want to build an L-shaped bunk bed, make sure you have the necessary tools and materials, use beams to form the rectangular mattress framework, attach the plywood sheet onto the framework, attach 18-inch posts on the corners, attach the 72-inch posts on the corners, attach the posts using the 72-inch plank, attach another pair of posts using the 36-inch plank, and arrange the upper and lower bunks.
L-shaped bunk beds are a unique variation on the traditional bunk bed. Follow this set of steps to build an L-shaped bunk bed.
Make sure you have the necessary tools and materials
For this project, you will need 4 pieces of post that measure 6”x6”x72”, 4 posts that measure 6”x6”x18”, 4 beams that measure 2”x4”x75”, 4 beams that measure 2”x4”36”, 2 plywood sheets with a ½ inch thickness and measuring 75”x39”, 2 planks that measure 1”x12”x72”, 2 planks that measure 1”x12”x33”, 1 box of 3-inch wood screws, a power saw, a power screwdriver and drill bits.
Use beams to form the rectangular mattress frame work
Set up 4 beams so that they form a rectangle. Make sure they are all laid on the sides that are narrow. The short beams should also be placed inside the longer pieces. Attach the pieces together using 2 screws for every joint. Drive the screw into the long beams and through the short beams.
Attach the plywood sheet onto the framework
Place the plywood sheet on the rectangular framework and use wood screws to attach the sheet to the frame. You should use one wood screw for each corner and one reinforcing screw for each center of the longer sides. Repeat this process for the second mattress frame.
Attach 18-inch posts on the corners
In one corner of the framework, place one end of an 18-inch post. Set it in place using one screw for every corner of the beam. Repeat this step until you have attached a post to each corner of one mattress frame.
Attach the 72-inch posts on the corners
Place one 72-inch post at every corner of the second mattress frame. Attach them in place using one screw for every corner of the beam. Repeat this procedure until all the other posts are screwed in place.
Attach the posts using the 72-inch plank
Use one of the 72-inch planks to attach a pair of posts on the longer side of the bunk. Make sure the plank is positioned in such a way that the top is a foot below the lower surface of the framework. Use a screw to fasten it in place. Attach the second long plank on the same side. Make sure that there is a distance of 1 foot between the bottom part of the plank and the floor. Use screws to attach it in place.
Attach another pair of posts using the 36-inch plank
Use the planks that measure 36 inches to connect another pair of posts on the shorter end of the frame. It should be positioned in a way that the upper surface of the plank is resting upon the 72-inch plank’s bottom. Attach a second plank underneath and make sure the bottom of the shorter plank rests upon the upper part of the longer one. Repeat the procedure for the other end.
Arrange the upper and lower bunks
Place the upper bunk frame in your desired position. Make sure the longer side with the attached planks is placed against the wall. Place the bottom bunk perpendicular to the upper bunk frame.
You have now finished building an L-shaped bunk bed and can put twin mattresses on each bunk.
