Every responsible citizen should know that home security is one very important factor that shouldn’t be put off when owning a home. It is often overlooked and just put much attention to it only until everything’s too late. There are actually many ways to protect your family and home from theft, crime, or any forms of violence. You can put extra locks on your doors, installing alarms, or even set up hidden cameras.

Security surveillance systems are becoming very popular these days. If you’re planning to use them on your home, you might want to consider these factors.

Advantages

Home owners can gain many advantages when using surveillance cameras. It is not merely for security or safety purposes but it can also be utilized in other ways as well. Since most of these cameras are well hidden from people’s sights and either installed at the interior or exterior part of the house, they can capture and record actions in video which can be viewed at a later time through the computer or even cell phone. You can now monitor for intruders or unknown personalities invading your property, check if your pets are indeed safe, watch repairmen if they’re doing their job well, and keep an eye on your household staff or nannies taking care of your children or elderly relatives while you are away.

Disadvantage

If you’re using these cameras to monitor your child or elderly relative, your care provider may not really like the idea. It isn’t because they don’t agree of you using such equipment. But, it is mainly because this can lead them to think that you don’t trust them too well to take care of your loved ones.

Types of cameras

Security cameras are either in black and wind, and colored. If you’re tight on the budget, the black and white cameras can already provide you with adequate monitoring but you might not see too well in low-light situations. The colored ones can provide you better resolutions but they cost more. You can also choose special feature to go along with the cameras like night-vision. Security systems along with the hardware and certain applications may be sold separately or in a package.

Price

Fortunately, you won’t have to spend much in purchasing a surveillance system. Home surveillance systems are now sold at more or less $100 dollars with one basic camera at most electronic stores. You can also invest on the more expensive systems with better features.

Legality

The use of security cameras has already been legalized in around 50 states in the US as long as it does not invade privacy and not to be used for lewd purposes. But, in 15 states namely California, Florida, Connecticut, Hawaii, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Louisiana, Montana, Massachusetts, Nevada, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Washington, it is forbidden to record speech without consent.
