The Dangers of Lyme disease

Our weather condition this past few years have been unstable. This could be the result of global warming wherein the heat of the sun has been trapped inside the earth’s atmosphere causing variable changes. Sooner or later, this heat may cause tremendous effect on the living things including human. Due to this unstable weather condition, opportunistic microorganisms and other parasites will try to invade and multiply. There are certain diseases that commonly occur during winter and cold season. Same thing goes during hot and summer season.

If you reside near the city or within the city, your main problem is more on the health risk that you may get due to water and air pollution. On the other hand, people residing in far away places and flank areas especially those living near the woods will be having a hard time if they want to have some connection to the real world. Wooded areas are also common habitat for some insects and other forms of organisms. In the United States, Canada, Asia, Australia and some parts of the world, a certain type of disease known as lyme disease is common. It is an infectious type wherein atleast three species of the bacteria has been found to be the main cause in major areas worldwide. It is a common tick borne disease transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected tick causing various manifestations. Once bitten, the client may experience some flu-like manifestation. Lyme disease symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain and body malaise after several days or weeks although some people may be asymptomatic. This type of disease is sometimes referred as the great imitator because it may reflect symptoms of other diseases which make it difficult to diagnose.

Just like in any other diseases, lyme’s disease has some classic manifestations. This includes a multiple rash that may resemble skin problems and other skin disorders.
An expanding rash known as erythema chronicum migrans with a bull’s eye appearance which may occur within a month after the exposure is the hallmark of the disease. Appropriate treatment for this disease is crucial depending on the patient’s condition and the disease itself. Antibiotics are commonly given during this stage although the antibiotics of choice may depend on the age and the patient’s condition.

There’s a better chance if prompt treatment is given. On the other hand, untreated patients may develop chronic symptoms which may affect the brain, heart, eyes, nerves and other vital body parts. In extreme cases, paraplegia may occur. Chronic neurologic problems and other neurologic conditions may occur to some patients. Other potential problem that may develop includes polyneuropathy (tingling sensation and numbness in the hands or feet), depression, fibromyalgia, chronic encephalomyelitis and frank psychosis although it is rare.

Just like in any other condition, prevention is better than cure. Use protective and appropriate clothing such as long-sleeved shirts and long trousers that are tucked and be sure to apply extra precaution (for pet lovers) in handling and allowing pets inside the house. You may apply some repellents to exposed area but refrain from contact with eyes, nose and other sensitive body parts.
